In a seemingly cinematic plot, a 37-year-old man in Bukidnon allegedly murdered a 75-year-old woman he accused of being a “mambabarang” or witch.
Based on an investigation, the suspect allegedly assaulted the woman with a coconut palm stalk before setting her ablaze using coconut palm stalks, husks, and leaves.
“So gipalo niya sa niyog yung dry na stalk. Eventually, nawalan ng malay, tuloy-tuloy na siya gisunog niya yung tao.” stated Major Jayvee Babaan, Spokesperson of the Bukidnon Police Provincial Office.
The incident occurred in Kibawe Bukidnon, shortly before midday on Saturday, July 26, 2025. However, it was reported to the authorities only the following day.
The police have indicated that the suspect may be experiencing mental health difficulties.
“Base sa information na bag-o lang siya gihiwalayan sa asawa niya, depressed ito na tao. Upon checking sa record, former surrenderee siya, drug-user siya dati.” Jayvee Babaan said.
The suspect has surrendered to law enforcement and has reportedly confessed to the crime. He will be charged with murder.
“Sa community, let us be observant tapos sa atong mga elderly na members ng family, let us visit them from time to time para aware tayo sa whereabouts nila.” Babaan stated.
